What goes around comes around, the old saying decrees.
That just couldn’t be truer for the commercial, government, military and scientific global messengers aligned out along the Clarke orbit and in various other heavenly configurations that provide a robust and growing infrastructure for global communications of all varieties.
Satellites passed their half-century mark just a few months ago and, after weathering the storms of technology threats such as fiber optics and wireless, are far beyond merely here to stay. As we enter The Sixth Decade for communications via satellite, established as well as evolving requirements for space-based solutions are keeping this market alive, vibrant and in a state of constant change and opportunity. The Sixth Decade will see the profitable development of new consumer, enterprise, and government applications, the maturation of offerings some years in the pipeline, and the continued deployment of traditional voice, video and data services worldwide.
It’s no time for complacency. Instead, at Sputnik + 50, it’s the season for new ideas, new alliances, new partnerships, new technologies, and new faces. It’s time to get ready for SATELLITE 2008: The Sixth Decade.
And, to hook back to what comes around, I am making a return engagement as chairman of the SATELLITE 2008 international conference and exhibition. About 25 years ago I attended my first-ever SATELLITE show as a PR flack employed at what was then the center of the commercial space-based universe, COMSAT, the Communications Satellite Corporation. A few years later, I somehow found myself as editor of Via Satellite and emcee of the SATELLITE annual gathering.
During that entire time, demand for reliable, always on communications via satellite has driven innovation and expansion of services into arenas foreseen only by the most prescient of prognosticators. From Sputnik to the then-astounding offering of 240 duplex voice channels over the Atlantic in 1965, we’ve grown this business into a global enterprise, not creaking with age but able to turn on a dime to take advantage of new challenges with enduring solutions.
So, welcome to the future and to SATELLITE 2008: The Sixth Decade. I’m thrilled to be back in the saddle as your chairman, older, not wiser, but more than ready to help chart the path to a successful future for all of us.

December 4 – What Should The Satellite Industry Do In The Aftermath Of The Decision Made By WRC-07?
Satellite operators use C-band to provide essential services such as TV transmissions, distance learning, telemedicine and disaster recovery, and in some countries C-band spectrum serves as the core communications network. But communications via satellite using radio frequencies around 4 gigahertz may face an interference threat from the rollout of mobile broadband technologies.
This is a key issue on the agenda for the ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07) and the satellite industry needs to be made aware of the situation.

Boeing Service Co. has been awarded a $31.1 million contract modification to provide broadband data service to U.S. military and government aircraft equipped with the Connexion by Boeing system, the U.S. Department of Defense announced July 27.
Typical applications used aboard Department of Defense and Department of State operated aircraft include Internet, e-mail, video teleconferencing and server access. The service also includes access to direct broadcast satellite TV service compatible with the system.
CableOne and Cox Communications are among the latest U.S. cable operators to join SES Americom’s triple-feed antenna program to provide access to new high-definition (HD) programming via the HD-Prime service, SES Americom announced July 30.
The program provides qualified cable operators with free Patriot Antenna Systems satellite antennas and associated equipment at each of their headends to receive programming via three SES Americom satellites. Among operators already participating are: Comcast, Bresnan Communications, Brighthouse Networks, RCN and many independent operators, SES Americom said.
iDirect Technologies Inc. will provide a satellite hub and 60 remote satellite routers to CrossSat Telecom Technology Co. Ltd., an independent oil and gas exploration group based in China, iDirect announced July 30.
The technology will be used to create a global IP network supporting Ku- and C-band communications. CrossSat will use the system to provide satellite connectivity to multiple Chinese oil and gas companies operating n China, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
The deal is valued at $500,000, iDirect said.
Separately, iDirect will introduce a DVB-S2 product line with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) integrated within its system architecture to support the DVB-S2 digital broadcast standard, the company announced July 30.
The next-generation satellite communications platform will provide customers with bandwidth efficiency improvements and be available in the fourth quarter.
Astro All Asia Networks, the leading pay-TV operator in Malaysia, will lease Ku-band capacity from Measat, the satellite operator announced July 26.
Measat will provide Astro with use of up to 13 Ku-band transponders, more than one quarter of the Measat-3 satellite’s communication capacity. The deal, which extends throughout the satellite’s operational life, is valued at $381 million.
The capacity will be used to support Astro’s efforts to expand its services throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and other parts of Asia, Paul Brown-Kenyon, Measat’s COO, said. Astro recently secured shareholder approval to invest $166 million in a joint venture with India’s Sun Group to provide satellite direct-to-home services in India before the end of the year.
